up root

you could not see me

i looked too small

you never wondered

or thought i’d crawl

i was a seedling

amongst urban sprawl

you could not see me

but i was tall

my roots had wandered

so deep underground

you thought you’d lost me

but i was bound

into my mother earth

i grew and grew

roots with girth

i was a seedling

as old as time

and never needed

to rise and climb

i felt the sunshine

i drank the soil

you could not see me

i was the coil
